Post by Allen BrunsonPost by Steve HodgsonWhen did PNews start using sounds to accompany actions such as deleting a
message or quitting the application?
it doesn't, really. it makes a sound when you put something in the trash
because putting something in the trash *always* makes a sound, whether pnews
is the instigator or not. the program never makes a sound when it exits, as
far as i know. perhaps you've got macosx set up to play a sound on program
exit. i've only spent about two hours total in macosx 10.4, so i don't know
if that's possible or not.
I can't explain this one at all. It's only PNews that is making any sort of
noise on exit. The noise is the built-in system sound 'Funk'. It never used
to do this. Has it always used the system noise when deleting?
Anyway I checked out the Console logs and PNews event log to see if anything
was happening but it all looks pretty normal.
The trash sound is pretty spectacular when running an app such as Chrono Sync
and deleting files at speed - I almost expected an electrical fire when I
first heard it.
Post by Allen BrunsonPost by Steve HodgsonI haven't used it in anger for a while [...]
"used it in anger." that sounds pretty weird, steve.
Must be a colloquial phrase, UK English and probably pretty old-fashioned at
that. I tried looking up in my dictionary of slang but couldn't see it.
Anyway it's using something as it was intended rather than testing it.
As an aside a recent posting mentioned development of PMail as an alternative
to "using a crummy ms program for e-mail in virtual pc". I was playing around
with Gyazmail recently and it struck me that it uses a similar philosophy to
PNews in that it has a single file per message rather than the usual mbox
file or database. Quite a nice application for anyone looking for a low-cost
mail client.
Happy new year.
