i thought it was kind of strange that nobody has ever bugged me about running
pnews on intel macs before now. i know there aren't a lot of those machines
in circulation yet, but i figured there would be at least ONE guy SOMEWHERE.

so, how about this: i am using pnews on an intel mac right now. everybody in
my department at my new job just got 15-inch macbooks. and i have yet to run
into a single issue so far. it all seems to work just fine, without me ever
having tested the code on this platform at all.

i must be a better programmer than i thought.

I guess I won't buy one before there is an optimzed version of VirtualPC or
something similar. Apart from that my PowerMac G5 still does a fine job.
OK, a MacBook Pro would definately be better for WoW than my slow iBook, but I
hardly use it for WoW anyway.

Good to hear that you have a new job and with decent equipment as well.

Congrats.

BTW, I've noticed a lot of postings lately where umlauts were replaced with
'?'. All of these postings were sent by Outlook Express with UTF-8 encoding. I
guess you didn't fiddle with the UTF-8 decoder, which probably means that OE
(or the users) seem to have switched to UTF-8 and its encoding is crap (which
is exactly what I would expect from Outlook Express)...

i am a lot more impressed with my macbook than i thought i would be. my
17-inch powerbook has a bigger screen of course, but i don't think it's got
enough bonus pixels to justify the extra weight. the macbook has two cpu
cores, it's a *lot* faster than my powerpc macs. the details are very good
for a one-dot-oh hardware product. i like the feel of the trackpad's button
better than the one on my powerbook. and the power brick has the magnetic
maglite connector, which is super-keen.

there are some good days, some bad. if you were on my lj friends list, you
could read about it. but getting to use a mac at work is a big bonus, i have
to admit.

i'm pretty sure that there are some code paths within pnews where it will
replace invalid utf-8 with question marks. that's probably what you're
seeing. but generating the invalid utf-8 wasn't my fault. i'd bet a lot of
money on that.

gaah, newsguy is putting that stupid thing there against my will! what a crap
move! i'm going to try adding my own .signature, to see if that will suppress
it. if not, i'll be cancelling my newsguy account. that is just
unbelievable.

I wondered about that but the fact I saw it reminded me that it was an
option. Budget budget budget.

I'm so tired of the money thing,

Gotta get newsguy again (it's been 5+ years).

Cool that your NR works on the intel macs. Since I posted about getting
a Mac, my mother won an eMac while shopping for food at a nearby
military base (Norman lived there in the early 90's). She gave the
computer to my boys. They love it (my youngest has eMacs at his school
- the others use PCs).

I won't put a newsreader on that computer but the entry of a Mac into
our household increases the likelihood that we'll get an intel mac ...
sometime soon.

It sucks that budgeting is a reality.

what the HELL. are you STILL HERE? has it not dawned on you that the last
time i willfully had anything to do with you was over FIVE YEARS AGO?

and for the alert readers in the audience, notice i have to use that
qualifier, "willfully," because he keeps trying to insinuate himself into my
life anyway. back in december 2004, he made up a fake lj identity called
'jennahollister', pretending to be a teenaged girl. he claimed he was trying
to out me as a pedophile, when what he was really doing was trying to get my
attention again. he wrote about it here:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.angst/msg/241a5228d3659c9f

he often removes old messages from the google cache when he realizes he's been
too much of a sick pervert even for his standards, so here's the text:

"Yes all, I've moved into the livejournal world. My early reasons had a lot to
do with getting enough evidence to get a person I feel is a
sickfuckpedophile arrested. After a while, I realized that:

1) I'm not cut out for dealing with slimeballs up close and personal
2) There were some interesting people in livejournal land

and

3) heh heh - that's a sekrit"

and no, bob, you WILL NOT buy a copy of my newsreader. you might send the
money, but i am for damned sure not sending you a registration key. and if
anybody thinks i'm being harsh, that goes for anybody else who ever accuses me
of being a pedophile.

bob, you are one evil, nasty, manipulative, fucked-up asshole. i wouldn't let
you back into my life if you were the last living thing on this planet.

how long does it take for you to get a hint? GO AWAY.
